Stain or paint — which should my deck get?
Stain if the wood is sound: it penetrates, shows grain, and wears by fading rather than peeling. Paint (or solid stain) if the surface is weathered past showing well — it covers completely but becomes a film you’ll maintain. We’ll tell you which your deck is actually ready for.
How often does a deck need re-staining in Minnesota?
Horizontal surfaces every two to three years for transparent and semi-transparent stains; solid stains and vertical surfaces last longer. Our climate is the reason — sun and freeze-thaw hit deck boards harder than any wall.
When is deck staining season?
Late spring through early fall, on dry wood — typically a few dry days after rain — and out of extreme heat. We schedule around the forecast because stain applied to damp wood fails early.
