Popcorn Ceiling Removal in the Twin Cities

Trade a Dated Ceiling for a Clean, Modern Finish

Popcorn ceilings date a house faster than almost anything else inside it. Removing one is straightforward work done well and a disaster done badly, which is why homeowners across the metro hand this job to our crews rather than a weekend of scraping and regret.

Step by Step

Our Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process

How a textured ceiling becomes a smooth one, step by step.

To get a free estimate — and a color consultation if paint is part of the project — use our online form or call (612) 816-5333.

Wet-scraping popcorn texture from a ceiling
  1. Contact us

Schedule an estimate and tell us about the rooms, the ceiling height, and roughly when the house was built. That last detail matters more than people expect.

  2. On-site assessment and age check

We inspect the ceiling in person. Textured ceilings installed before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos, so if there’s any question about the age, testing comes before scraping — always. If a sample comes back positive, we’ll refer you to a licensed abatement contractor instead of proceeding.

  3. Review the estimate

You receive a written scope covering the rooms included, containment, removal, skim coating, priming, painting, and cleanup — with the price attached before anyone picks up a scraper.

  4. Seal and contain the space

Floors, walls, fixtures, and doorways get masked and sealed. Light fixtures and ceiling fans come down. This is the step that determines whether you’re living in a construction zone for a week or just avoiding one room.

  5. Scrape the texture

The ceiling is lightly misted and scraped clean. Wet scraping keeps the debris heavy and on the drop cloths instead of airborne and in your vents.

  6. Skim, sand and prime

Bare ceilings are almost never flat underneath. We skim-coat the surface, sand it level, and prime it so the finish coat lays down evenly instead of flashing in patches.

  7. Paint and reinstall

The ceiling is painted, fixtures go back up, and containment comes down. We walk the room with you before the drop cloths are packed.

The Honest Version

Why Hire a Twin Cities Ceiling Contractor?

Popcorn removal is the project most likely to go sideways on a DIY weekend — not because scraping is hard, but because everything around the scraping is. Testing, containment, skim coating, and a paint-ready finish are what separate a smooth ceiling from a blotchy one.

When you work with our team, here’s what you get:

  • High-quality craftsmanship, never from subcontractors.

Our own in-house employees complete every project. We invest in training our crews in trade technique, jobsite conduct and customer service, and we don’t hand your home to a rotating cast of subs.

  • Lasting results you will love.

We stand behind our work in writing. If something isn’t right after we’ve gone, we come back and correct it — no argument about whose responsibility it was.

  • Fair, transparent pricing.

Our standards are high and our pricing is straightforward. You get a written scope with the price attached, and options at different price points where they genuinely exist.

  • Local knowledge that matters here.

Minnesota’s climate is hard on buildings. Freeze-thaw cycles, humid summers and long heating seasons all change what holds up. We’ve worked in this metro since 2007 and it shapes what we recommend.

  • A reputation you can check yourself.

Good Questions

Popcorn Ceiling Removal — Common Questions

Does my popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?

It might, if it was installed before roughly 1985. We don’t guess on this one. If the age is uncertain, testing comes first, and if a sample is positive we’ll point you to a licensed abatement contractor rather than take the job.

Can I stay in the house during removal?

In most cases, yes. We contain and seal the work area room by room, so the rest of the house stays usable. We’ll tell you honestly if a particular project is an exception.

Do the ceilings have to be repainted afterward?

Yes — and that’s included. Scraped ceilings need skim coating, sanding, and priming before paint, or the finish will telegraph every imperfection underneath.

Junior and his crew were great to work with on our office redesign. They got us our estimate same day and gave a great price. The hardworking crew got the job done faster than I expected, and it also came out perfectly. We will be using him and his team again in the future.

I hired Home Drywall and Painting to finish my three-car garage starting from bare studs, and they did an outstanding job. They handled insulation, full sheetrock installation, mudding and taping, and painting — all in-house. What normally would take multiple contractors was completed by one company, which made the process smooth and efficient.

After my first contractor jerked me around for 2 weeks with excuses, the team at Home Drywall & Painting became my Plan B. Jessica took my call, sent me a proposal and had me booked next day. Adam had his team dispatched and they finished in about 3.5 hours. They had one hiccup during install, but they resolved the issue and made it right. Everyone was respectful and polite. The end price was exactly what I was quoted. Happy to recommend.

They were very respectful of our home and our schedule, did an absolutely beautiful job — and communicated daily about what to expect. A plumbing water damage mishap to our finished lower level meant repairing the entire ceiling: skim, sand, re-texture, paint — plus removal and reinstallation of ceiling fans, a chandelier, can lights, speakers and vents. Gerid and the Home Drywall team also offered a very competitive price.
