Wallpaper Removal in the Twin Cities

Off the Wall and Ready to Paint — Without the Damage

Wallpaper removal starts easy and turns into a project somewhere around the third strip. Old adhesive, multiple layers, paper hung directly on unprimed drywall — these are the moments a weekend job becomes a wall that needs skim coating. We handle all of it, including the repair.

Step by Step

Our Wallpaper Removal Process

Getting paper off is half the job. The wall underneath is the other half.

To get a free estimate — and a color consultation if paint is part of the project — use our online form or call (612) 816-5333.

Stripping wallpaper layers back to the bare wall
  1. Contact us

Schedule an estimate. If you know the paper’s age or whether it was hung over primed drywall or bare plaster, mention it — it changes the approach substantially.

  2. Test a section

We remove a small test area to see how the paper and adhesive behave and what condition the wall is in. That test tells us whether this is a two-day job or a two-day job plus skim coating.

  3. Review the estimate

You get the scope in writing — removal, adhesive cleanup, wall repair, priming, and painting if you want it — with the price and a realistic timeline.

  4. Protect the room

Floors, trim, outlets, and furniture are covered and protected. Wallpaper removal is a wet, messy process, and containment is what keeps it confined to the walls.

  5. Score, steam and strip

The paper is scored where needed, steamed or treated with solution, and stripped in sections. Patience beats force here — aggressive scraping is what gouges drywall paper and creates repair work.

  6. Remove every trace of adhesive

Walls are washed until the residue is fully gone. Leftover paste is the reason repainted walls develop a blotchy, uneven sheen weeks later, and it’s the step most often rushed.

  7. Repair, prime and paint

Gouges and torn drywall face paper are patched, skim-coated where needed, sanded, and primed. Then the room gets painted — and looks like the wallpaper was never there.

The Honest Version

Why Hire a Twin Cities Wallpaper Removal Contractor?

Almost everyone who calls us about wallpaper has already tried a corner of it themselves. The problem is rarely the paper — it’s the damaged drywall underneath and the adhesive residue that ruins the paint job afterward. Because we’re a drywall and painting company, that entire chain is one crew and one scope.

When you work with our team, here’s what you get:

  • High-quality craftsmanship, never from subcontractors.

Our own in-house employees complete every project. We invest in training our crews in trade technique, jobsite conduct and customer service, and we don’t hand your home to a rotating cast of subs.

  • Lasting results you will love.

We stand behind our work in writing. If something isn’t right after we’ve gone, we come back and correct it — no argument about whose responsibility it was.

  • Fair, transparent pricing.

Our standards are high and our pricing is straightforward. You get a written scope with the price attached, and options at different price points where they genuinely exist.

  • Local knowledge that matters here.

Minnesota’s climate is hard on buildings. Freeze-thaw cycles, humid summers and long heating seasons all change what holds up. We’ve worked in this metro since 2007 and it shapes what we recommend.

  • A reputation you can check yourself.

Good Questions

Wallpaper Removal — Common Questions

How long does wallpaper removal take?

A typical room runs one to two days for removal and cleanup, plus additional time if the wall needs skim coating and if painting is part of the scope. The test section during the estimate gives us a reliable read.

Can you paint directly over wallpaper instead?

We generally advise against it. Seams telegraph through, moisture from the paint can loosen the adhesive, and it makes proper removal much harder later. There are narrow exceptions and we’ll tell you if yours is one.

Will my walls be damaged?

Some damage is normal, especially where paper was hung on unprimed drywall. That’s expected and it’s included — patching, skim coating and priming are part of the job, not a change order.

Junior and his crew were great to work with on our office redesign. They got us our estimate same day and gave a great price. The hardworking crew got the job done faster than I expected, and it also came out perfectly. We will be using him and his team again in the future.

I hired Home Drywall and Painting to finish my three-car garage starting from bare studs, and they did an outstanding job. They handled insulation, full sheetrock installation, mudding and taping, and painting — all in-house. What normally would take multiple contractors was completed by one company, which made the process smooth and efficient.

After my first contractor jerked me around for 2 weeks with excuses, the team at Home Drywall & Painting became my Plan B. Jessica took my call, sent me a proposal and had me booked next day. Adam had his team dispatched and they finished in about 3.5 hours. They had one hiccup during install, but they resolved the issue and made it right. Everyone was respectful and polite. The end price was exactly what I was quoted. Happy to recommend.

They were very respectful of our home and our schedule, did an absolutely beautiful job — and communicated daily about what to expect. A plumbing water damage mishap to our finished lower level meant repairing the entire ceiling: skim, sand, re-texture, paint — plus removal and reinstallation of ceiling fans, a chandelier, can lights, speakers and vents. Gerid and the Home Drywall team also offered a very competitive price.
